Toilets to write home about

We recently welcomed the arrival of our long-awaited toilets at the Early Learning Centre!

After much deliberation we decided to go with Ecosan toilets – this magical invention comes as a ready made unit which is easy to install, and it converts waste into compost. The action of opening and closing the toilet lid pushes the waste through a thick, black tube. The waste collects in a barrel-like container at the end of the tube and within a couple of months the content of the barrel has turned to compost and can be disposed of easily and hygienically. Until now, we have been using a bucket system – with a roster for emptying the contents of the bucket daily. You can imagine our delight at not having to do this anymore!! Viva Ecosan, Viva!!

We built a simple wooden structure to house the toilets. The structure has 4 compartments – the first three house the toilets and the last one has three little urinals. The pic below was taken before the walls were erected.

Many thanks to the German volunteers from Tapini NGO for their invaluable assistance! And to Andre and Jasmin Friend for their donation of one toilet unit and for helping us to transport the units all the way from JHB.

We get so much negative news which is published for the sensational content. I would like to encourage readers of Sunday papers to request the editors to dedicate at least 2 pages of the newspaper to projects like this. Well done all who work so hard and tirelessly. Estelle
