The sun shines on Khanyisa Preschool

The community of Mgojweni village celebrated the opening of Khanyisa Preschool on 1 June – the result of a partnership between the BI, its funders and the Mgojweni community, utilizing the government Community Work Programme (CWP). Speeches, singing, dancing and drumming were the prelude to the formal handing over of the keys by Réjane to Chief No-ofisi.

Chief No-ofisi and the Mgojweni community had given 2 rondavels and some land for this first Early Childhood Development (ECD) facility in their village. After many months of hard work, the two rondavels had been renovated, toilets, a kitchen and storeroom had been built, a water tank erected, and the playground levelled, grassed and fenced.

The 2 classrooms were then transformed into fully equipped preschool classrooms with toys and educational materials, under the guidance of Xolisa Dayimani, the excellent teacher of the 3-4 year olds at Jujurha Preschool.  The Jujurha Education Centre (JEC) provides ongoing on-the-job training and support for the 3 new teachers  which supplements their formal ECD training.

During the last weeks of July, a good friend of the BI, Emma Gray returned to Bulungula to paint her beautiful murals at Khanyisa Preschool, often cycling 24km to Mgojweni and back in all weathers!

Members of the Jujurha Preschool Committee have also assisted with the formation of the Khanyisa Preschool Committee and the BI gardeners are working with the Khanyisa gardeners to establish their organic vegetable garden which will supplement the nutrition programme.

The next preschool, in FolokhweVillage, is already under construction, the 3 teachers started their training at the JEC during the month of July and it is hoped that the preschool will open at the end of September. The last preschool, in Tshezi village will open at the end of 2012 / the beginning of 2013.

  1. Wow! The BI engine just never stops! The new preschool looks as wonderful as Jujurha, and it sounds like Folokwe is not far behind. Looking forward to my next opportunity to sing and dance with the beautiful children!
