Mentor Mothers training for our caregivers

For two weeks our home based caregivers attended the Mentor Mothers training which is part of the Philani outreach programme. The Philani Health and Nutrition Project is a community-based non-governmental organization (NGO) committed to the protection of the rights of every child to proper nutrition and healthcare in communities where malnourished children and destitute mothers are most vulnerable. The two weeks of training included sessions on: negotiating household entry, respect, confidentiality, developing listening skills, nutrition (breastfeeding, introduction of solids, household economics), malnutrition, growth monitoring, weighing and plotting, measuring of height/length, child health, antenatal and postnatal care of mother and child, antenatal and post natal depression, counselling. Finally, they were introduced to the process of home visiting and participated in role play assessments.

Two more weeks of training are to follow in a couple of months during which they will complete the remaining theoretical training in class and then watch experienced Mentor Mothers implementing the intervention in an inspiring manner.
