Our Nomakhayas (Community Health Workers) organise regular workshops for parents who attend our Playgroup Programme with their babies and toddlers. The Playgroup programme is held twice weekly in all four villages and is an important component of our Early Childhood Development (ECD) at Home programme. This week the Nomakhayas presented a toy making workshop, The workshop discussed the importance of learning through play and how to make toys with locally available materials and items that are usually regarded as rubbish. Parents were encouraged to play with their children and learned how important this is for healthy cognitive development, from the earliest years of life. Play lays the ground work for later success in life and can affect a child’s ability to learn across all subject areas, once they reach the school going stage.
