We had the pleasure of hosting Siyabonga National Book Week at our four schools (No Ofisi, Melibuwa, Nguberhamba, Xhora Mouth). National Book Week (NBW) is South Africa’s official reading awareness week to celebrate literature. In a study, NBW found that only 14% of South Africans read books, and 58% of households do not own a single leisure book. NBW aims to increase the joy of reading by increasing access to books in communities across South Africa.
In partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture, Mbashe Municipality, the Jilamba Judicial Council, and South African Book Development Council, we had poets, story tellers, games, and competitions at all of our schools promoting the fun of reading!
The event culminated into a big competition of spelling, reading, and debate— the two days were full of vibrant and energetic fun! At the end of the event, each child was given a book to take home!
We are happy for the exposure and opportunity our learners received in order to instill and spread the joy of reading!
