We are excited to share that Bulungula Lodge, our community-owned eco-lodge, is currently underway with a major new round of renovations and upgrades.
The renovations include upgrades to the bar, kitchen, and restaurant spaces; full electrical rewiring and solar optimisation; stormwater drainage improvements and roof repairs; expanded security infrastructure; improved group and workshop facilities; and interior upgrades across the Lodge.
One of the parts we are most excited about is that the project is also creating opportunities for local skills development and small business growth. Community carpenters are being trained to design and build furniture for the Lodge, creating experience and opportunities that we hope will continue after the renovations are complete.
Like many small tourism businesses, the Lodge has had to navigate some difficult years recently. COVID-19 devastated the tourism industry, and recovery for independent lodges and backpackers has been slow and uneven. More recently, tourism along the Wild Coast has faced additional challenges that have impacted travel to the region.
During this time, the support of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) has truly been a lifeline for Bulungula Lodge.
In early 2023, the IDC supported three major projects at the Lodge: the installation of a lodge-wide solar energy system, Africa’s first fully solar-powered electric tourism shuttle, and the addition of five new en-suite guest huts.
The impact of these upgrades was immediate. Within six months, the Lodge moved from operating at a loss to profitability, while revenue and occupancy increased significantly.
Now, through this latest round of support, the IDC is once again helping us strengthen and protect the future of the Lodge.
For us, this support means much more than infrastructure improvements. Since the beginning, the vision of Bulungula Lodge has been to demonstrate a successful community-driven eco-tourism model in a deep rural area. The Lodge remains proudly 100% community-owned, with all profits reinvested in our community and shared community assets.
The IDC’s support has helped ensure that the Lodge can remain community-owned and community-run during an exceptionally difficult period for tourism — without needing to sell, scale back the vision, or close our doors.
We are also deeply grateful to the many guests who continue to visit Bulungula Lodge and support this vision simply by choosing to stay with us.
For some guests, visiting Bulungula is an opportunity to experience a completely different way of life… to slow down and experience the beauty and tranquillity of rural Xhosa life on the Wild Coast. For others, it is a chance to reconnect with village life, language, culture, and ways of living that are often lost in everyday life.
In a tourism industry increasingly dominated by standardised experiences, Bulungula Lodge continues to offer something authentic, grounded in real connection to people, culture, community, and place. An experience we hope to share with others for years to come.
