The 7 children who are recipients of Vulindlela Scholarships are making very good progress at Umtata International School, according to their mid year reports. They enjoy showing off their ability to read some of the early (English) readers in our library but one of their greatest challenges is improving their proficiency in English, the language of instruction, particularly as they hear and speak only isiXhosa in their homes. In an effort to assist the children in this regard, a special English Support Programme was set up at the Jujurha Education Centre during the June/July holidays. The children thoroughly enjoyed attending these interactive sessions every morning, especially singing and acting out Nursery Rhymes! This programme will be developed further and will be incorporated in the preschool curriculum with immediate effect. While we believe strongly in mother-tongue education for young children, we are aware of the benefits of introducing English as an additional language at a young age.
