How our learners have grown!

Scholarship kids 2016 rotate 2

2016: How they have grown!

In 2011, 7 children from the Grade R class at Jujurha Preschool were chosen to participate in our scholarship programme. The programme enables the children to attend a good school in Mthatha. All expenses are covered, including living costs, the employment of 2 families members to take care of them fulltime in Mthatha and bi-monthly trips home.

The children have continued to progress well. They are now in Grade 5 at Vela Primary School in Mthatha.

Attending school in Mthatha has of course been a big change for children who come from such a remote rural area. However, they have been extraordinarily resilient and have flourished over the years. Of course there are challenges that the learners experience from time to time. Therefore, we have employed a tutor, a retired teacher, to work with them for 3 days a week. Their tutor is supported with additional materials and learning aids provided by the Bulungula Incubator.

I spent a lovely hour over the past weekend having an informal conversation with them. It was amazing to see how differently children think. When I asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, two of girls said they wanted to become doctors. When I asked if any of them wanted to be teachers, the opinion was unanimous: “No, no, children are naughty and noisy” I laughed my lungs out – I guess it takes one to know one. One of the boys said that he wanted to be a Police Doctor – I have yet to find out what that is, probably, psychologist, forensic or pathologist, I do not know. What I know is that the Bulungula Incubator, will ensure that they are supported in their journey towards the attainment of their dreams.
